Johns Creek is a small town in Fulton County, Georgia, United States. The population was 2,597 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Atlanta metropolitan area and is located west of I-285. The first settlers in Johns Creek were farmers who arrived in 1802 from England. In 1807, John Stevens founded a log cabin on what is now Main Street and named it after himself. By 1830, many families had moved to Johns Creek from southeastern Georgia due to the cost of land and other factors such as available water supplies. On February 3, 1830, a group of men including Stevens set out from their log cabin on what is now Main Street for what would be their final attempt at settling in this new location. They foundered on the highlands east of where they later settled but are still remembered for their venture because it laid the groundwork for future development in Johns Creek. In 1847, General Nathan Bedford Forrest established a military post near present-day Johnson City (later known as Alpharetta) after his forces routed an invading force led by Andrew Jackson at Battle of Horseshoe Bend near Decatur County line. To finance his war effort, Forrest created a currency system called "the Forrest Method." The cashless system allowed him to spend money quickly without having to carry any coins or paper money with him when he fought his battles. The post served as an important supply depot during the antebellum period and furnished food for soldiers and civilians alike.
