After being displaced, some of these Creeks moved into present-day Johnson County where they continued fishing until about 1800 when cotton plantation living began becoming dominant among them Facing economic hardship during the American Civil War (1861-1865), some Cherokee leaders decided to seek refuge in Canada where they remain today
