Johns Creek, Georgia is home to the oldest black powder manufacturing center in the United States. The site was once an agricultural district that produced corn, cotton, and other crops. In 1836, a group of men from Chattanooga decided to start a gun factory in what is now Johns Creek. They named their company "Patriots" because they believed in using only American-made ammunition. The Patriot Factory quickly became one of the most successful firearms factories in America. It manufactured rifles, pistols, shotguns, cannons, and more. Soon enough, other manufacturers began to come to the Patriot Factory for supplies. Johns Creek is located in Fulton County, Georgia. The creek was named for John Stevens, a Revolutionary War soldier and merchant. In 1814, the US Congress passed the Ordinance of 1794 which designated the creek as a public watercourse. This ordinance allowed for the construction of canals and ditches to improve the area's water supply. The first canal was built in 1824 and stopped at what is now Lumpkin Street. The second canal was built in 1827 and reached what is now Pryor Boulevard. The third canal was built in 1835 and became known as the Columbia Canal after it crossed over from Tennessee to Georgia. By 1850, all three canals had been completed and were used to carry goods and passengers between Atlanta and Decatur. The Columbia Canal closed in 1886 because of problems with flooding. However, another canal called the Underground Railroad helped many slaves escape during this time period. Aftermath of this event led to development along Pryor Boulevard which today marks one of Johns Creek's most important commercial districts
