Johns Creek is a small town in Fulton County, Georgia. The population was 3,005 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Atlanta metropolitan area. The town is named after General John Fayette Johnston, who fought in the American Civil War and became a U.S. Senator from Georgia. Johns Creek was founded in 1811 by Colonel James Robertson and his family. In 1827, John Crain built the first mill on the creek and made Johns Creek one of the most important transportation corridors in southeastern Georgia. In 1837, General Robert Ewell drove off Native Americans living along the creek and founded Milledgeville to replace Johns Creek as an agricultural center. The railroad arrived in Johns Creek in 1864 and quickly changed its economy from agriculture to industry; by 1880, mills had replaced farms as the primary sources of income for villagers. By 1899, steel production had begun to take hold as well; railroads were necessary to carry goods upriver to mills that produced steel products such as rails and gears for ships and cars. Steel production declined during World War II but has revived since then due to increased demand for vehicles and other products made from iron ore mined near Johns Creek
