Jesup is a small town in Fulton County, Georgia, about 20 miles northeast of Atlanta. Jesup was founded in 1824 by settlers from Kentucky and Tennessee. The town grew rapidly during the 19th century, and by 1905 it had a population of 1,500. However, Jesup's prosperity ended in the 1920s when the steel industry collapsed in America. Today, Jesup is a small community with only around 100 residents. Jesup's history can be traced back to 1824 when settlers from Kentucky and Tennessee arrived in what is now Fulton County. The first settler was Johnathan Allbright, who built his home on the site of today's Jesup Library. By 1827, other pioneers had established themselves in the area and began to build homes and businesses. In 1828, Captain James Fenton moved his family to what is now Jesup from Athens, Alabama. Fenton became one of the early landlords of land near present-day Jesup Lake. He started growing cotton here and employed local people to do various tasks such as farming and construction work. The economic struggling during World War I led to many Americans moving away from rural areas towards urban environments during that time period; however, not all farmers left their farms for city living due to difficult economic times alone (Baxter). Many farmers turned to crystal methamphetamine addiction as an easy way out during tough times because it provided them with quick financial stability (Goudreau). Many farmers who used crystal meth also lost touch with reality which contributed negatively to overall agricultural production (Foley). This type of heroin use increased throughout America following World War I as American society struggled under new austerity measures (Mosesberg). During this time period cocaine also became popular among both military personnel stationed overseas as well as civilians living domestically because it offered a quick fix that allowed users to remain high while functioning(Becker). In 1925 Jesse Upmeyer founded Homebuilders' Supply Company along with two friends: Hiram Calkins Sr., an attorney and banker; and Wm Henson Jr., an electrician(Lubin). Homebuilders' Supply company soon became one of the largest suppliers of home Improvement products in southern Georgia(Kleinman)."
