The Jesup shooting of December 5, 2015 has reignited a conversation about firearms and hearing protection. The tragedy began when 35-year-old Nicholas Dworet shot and killed 20-year old Jesse Hill in front of his parents home in Jesup. Since the shooting, many people have voiced their opinions on gun control and firearms safety. Some believe that guns should not be banned because they protect Second Amendment rights; however, others feel that sound processing devices like ear muffs can save lives. In the weeks following the shooting, many people gathered at local businesses to demand better firearms regulation. Gun owners who were at the scene of the shooting testified that they did not know what to do with their weapons after Dworet killed Hill. Many people are still waiting for answers as to why Dworet committed this atrocity and whether or not he was able to hear vehicular traffic behind him while firing his weapon.

Jesup is a small town in the Georgia peach belt, located about midway between Atlanta and Savannah. Jesup's population was 11,811 in 2000 and 12,716 in 2010. It is the county seat of Jones County. The community has a post office (JESU) which opened in 1868, and an annual agricultural fair that is the most important event in Jesup's calendar. In 2002, Jesup was named one of "America's 50 Best Small Towns" by Forbes magazine. The first settler in what would become Jesup was John Crawford who founded what would become Crawfordville on April 10th, 1800. He married Anna Hardman and they had six children: John (1801-1872), Mary (1803-1887), Rachel (1806-1885), Jesse (1799-1871), Jameson Crawford(1800-1877) and Caroline Hardman(1802-1962). By 1805 the population of Jesup consisted of only eight people including Crawford family members living on a plot of land that measured three acres total. That same year Samuel Ballard purchased 300 acres from John Hardman for $650 and began to develop it into what would become Jesup today with his wife as his partner serving as real estate agent/trader/builder until her death in 1865; followed by their son Jesse Ballard who ran the business from 1861 until his death in 1905 when he bequeathed it to his son Jameson Ballard Jr.. After Jameson Ballard Jr.'s death it passed through several families before passing into hands of descendants of George Washington Nicollet who lived there from 1907 until 1957 when they sold it to Jack Easley who developed it into present dayJesappeParks& Recreation area which includes golf courses, water sports, restaurants etc. The first Christian church was built at Mohawk Creek on October 15th, 1837 by Rev. Harnett Witherspoon with help from fundraiser Isaac Shephard using funds provided by Colonel Robert Fulton Sr.. The Reverend Witherspoon served as pastor for five years before leaving to start his own congregation which met at Peachtree Springs Baptist Church until 1840 when he moved them to Mohawk Creek due to lack of space at Peachtree Springs Baptist Church; again attended by Reverend Witherspoon until his death two years later after preaching 2 ½ hours each day for 30 days nonstop during winter months while working on improving Mohawk Creek Bridge over the creek without rest or heat! It is also home to several cultural attractions such as the Presbyterian church which has been used as a movie set for more than 50 movies since 1957; Georgian culture museum; and Jesseupp Park which features tennis courts, baseball diamonds, basketball courts, football fields, and dance studios.
