Jesup, Georgia is home to a number of gunsmiths and one of the most active shooting communities in the country. The community has been known for its muzzleloader and rifle shooters for centuries. In 1873, Jesup was founded by Captain James Fenton as a landing on the Chattahoochee River. Today, Jesup remains a center of firearms culture with many shops and galleries specializing in hunting rifles, shotguns, pistols and revolvers. One of the earliest gunsmiths in Jesup was George Wills who worked from 1842-1868. Wills built three rifles at his shop: the Winchester Model 1871 (the first revolver caliber rifle), the Spencer repeating shotgun and the Colt Single Action Army revolver. His work at Jesup helped create American handguns such as Browning lever-action shotguns, Remington pump guns and Colt Python revolvers. Later in history, another important Gunsmith inJesup was John Stevens who worked from 1865-1911. Stevens created innovative firearm designs including the Stevens Rifle (the first actioned recoil operated rifle), Thompson submachineguns and Heckler & Koch HK416 assault rifles. Stevens is also credited with helping to popularize airgun ammunition within America during this time period.

Jesup is located on the Chattahoochee River just east of Athens. Jesup grew up around logging and farming operations in the area. After World War II, Jesup became an agricultural center with cotton farming becoming dominant. In the late 20th century, industrial development took hold in Jesup with manufacturing plants such as American Can and Philips joining forces to form Phillips sheet metal products company which dominated the local economy for years. Today, Jesup is still a predominately rural community with agriculture accounting for most of its employment and land use. However, there are some businesses that have moved into town over the years including a hospital and grocery store.

The Jesuit mission at Jesup was established in 1785 and continued until 1817. Today, Jesup is home to more than 160 residents and offers a variety of cultural attractions including an exposition hall, a Roman Catholic church, and a public library. The history of Jesup can be traced back to the early 1800s when European colonists arrived in what is now Georgia. One such settler was Father José de Jesus Uribe who founded the Xavier Mission at Jesup in 1817. After years of growth, the Xavier Mission was relocated to nearby Milledgeville in 1830. In 1850, Father James Jarratt erected the first permanent buildings for the school system at Jesup which he called "Hilton School." Jesuit priest Father John Hughes also served as superintendent of schools from 1850-1858. during this time period many new churches were built throughout Georgia including one at Jesup which was dedicated on October 12th, 1859. In 1861Jesuit missionaries Fray Francisco Zaragoza and Fray Lorenzo Ruiz left Milledgeville for what would become known as missionary country around Valdosta Island where they began their work among the Native Americans known today as Cobb County Georgians. In 1865Fray Francisco Zaragoza became superior general of all Georgia priests with jurisdiction over both North America and South America; this made him spiritual leader for all Georgian priests stationed outside of Georgia proper (the Archdiocese of Atlanta). On July 1st 1870Father Francisco Zaragoza died suddenly while serving at St Michael's Abbey near Savannah; his death created quite an uproar within the Georgian priesthood due to his accomplishments both inside and outsideof GeorgiaThe following year on September 6th 1870Pope Pius IX appointed Father George Macartney titular bishopric of Ossa with jurisdiction over Vicinity (Georgia) effective October 3rd 1870; this appointment made Fray George Macartney Bishop Emeritus of Ossa with authority over all priests located within Cobb County Georgians A few months later on November 15th 1870Pope Pius IX reestablished Ecclesiastical Province Of Novara with Monsignor Valentine Jugliano as its first Archbishop; this gave Italian immigrants living within Cobb County access to religious education available only to those Catholics who had already received an education beyond high school level In 1875Fray Antonio Garrido became superior general of all Georgians after replacing Fray Francisco Zaragoza As part-time administratorat Hilton School A few years later on December 21st 1880Fray Bernardino Lopez became superior generalof all Georgians after succeeding Fray Bernardino Lopez As part-time administratorat Hilton School And finally on May 10th 1892Pope Leo XIII appoints Fathers Carlos Gomez Lugo & Manuel Echegarria Titular Bishoprics Of Ossa And Athanase Marques De fatima respectively With full jurisdictions over both vicinities effective May 24th 1893Signed: Dated: José de Jesus Uribe y Ortiz George Macartney Valentine Jugliano
