The first settler in Jesup was Phebe Clements of Jacksonville, Florida in 1816. She and her husband James built a cabin on a bluff overlooking the Chattahoochee River. They named their cabin "Jesup" after their home state of Georgia. In 1824, Alexander Macon founded what is now known as Macon College in Jesup. In 1825, General Andrew Jackson founded Fort Gaines in Jesup to protect the river trade from Native Americans who were raiding downstream villages along the Chattahoochee River. Jesup became an incorporated town on December 3, 1885 by Anson Grimes as one of several towns consolidated under his jurisdiction when he became sheriff of Fulton County. The original town plat includes land east and west of US Highway 20 and north and south of SR-2 (now US-1) between Fayetteville Road and Dewey Hill Road (present day Park Row Boulevard). According to the 2000 U.S. Census there were 7,944 people living in Jesup proper; 5% more than the 6,851 counted for 2000 but 2% less than the 8,723 counted for 1990. The racial makeup ofJesup was 98% White; 1% African American; 0% Native American; 0% Asian Pacific Islander; 1% from other races; and 2% from two or more races mix together

After the war ended, many Union soldiers abandoned their posts here and most of what remains today is built up around former cotton plantations which have since been neglected and are now a popular tourist destination among Georgians and visitors alike.
