Jesup was once a thriving town nestled in the mountainous region of Southeast Georgia, home to an indigenous people known as the Creek Nation. The area was first settled by European settlers in the early 1800s, and Jesup quickly became a popular spot for frontier life. In 1821, Jesup became part of what is now Cherokee County. In 1832, it received its own courthouse and jail. During the late 19th century and early 20th century, Jesup experienced significant growth thanks to its strategic location near railroad lines and its close proximity to Atlanta. During World War II, Jesup played an important role in the Battle of Jonesboro. On July 16, 1941, Japanese forces attacked American soldiers stationed at Fort McPherson in southeastern Georgia while they were on maneuvers. Over 50 Americans were killed or wounded before friendly fireamed killed 3 more Japanese soldiers. This event is also known as "The Battalion Massacre." In 1955, Jesup Voters passed a resolution authorizing annexation by Cobb County due to population growth and lack of other options for development in the community. On August 1st of that year, Jesup officially became part of Cobb County after years of discussion and debate.

Jesup was founded by Nicholas Jesup and his brothers in 1829 as a logging post on the headwaters of the Chattahoochee River. The town grew rapidly due to its location and access to farmland and timber resources. In 1881, Jesup became the first incorporated municipality in Macon County.Jesup has experienced rapid growth in recent years due to its location near Interstate 85 and its access to jobs in the surrounding metropolitan area. The town currently hosts a variety of businesses, including an insurance company, a truck stop, and several restaurants and bars. According to 2000 Census data, nearly one-third of residents are married with children under age 18 living within their homes; this number has grown markedly over recent decades as more families have moved into Jesup from other parts of Fulton County.

Jesup is a town in Macon County, Georgia, United States. The population was 1,868 at the 2010 census. Jesup was founded in 1819 by Captain John Jesup and his family. The first post office was established in 1825. It moved to its present location in 1892. The history of Jesseup can be traced back to 1797 when Major James Robertson, who had been with General Robert Fulton's team that built the first successful steamboat on the Chattahoochee River, settled near present-day Jesup. He named the stream "Jesup" after George Washington's son-in-law and fellow officer William Smallwood (1763-1837), one of two men chosen by Congress to survey and lay out portions of what would become Macon County. In 1800, Captain John Jesup founded a small community at Beech Knoll on the east side of the river opposite Savannah; it became known as Jesupsville after him and his family moved there in 1819. In 1830, Captain John's grandson Samuel married Maria Hill (1788–1847) and they renamed their new community after her –Jesupe or "Jupiter." In 1840, Isaac McCoy purchased part of what is now Jesupe from Captains JohnJesu & Samuel Hill for $2 per acre; McCoy named his parcel "McCoy's Landing." In 1860, following Indian Removal policy implemented by President Abraham Lincoln, most of what is now Macon County was absorbed into Alabama; however, some land downriver still remained under Creek ownership so parts of Macon County were formed from Creek Township including today's JesseUPdavidsonCounty government district #4 which includes much of modern day Polk County also inhabited by Native Americans before European contact: Cherokee Nation ceded lands upstream including modern day BartowCounty along with large sections within Adam Clayton Powell Jr.'s Congressional District located just northeast of Newnan where he served as Mayor from 1968 until his death in 1974). Captain John Jesu left instructions that if any descendant should die intestate without leaving an heir then all property belonging thereto shall revert to such descendent upon proof satisfactory to both parties being made he never having executed any settlement agreements nor given any order unto contrary notwithstanding final disposition herein procured between himself & wifeMaria Hill alias jessupe/jupiter—thus making legal heirs numerous as well as personal possessions suddenly Hideth Fuller 4 children born prior to second marriage btwn Martha Jane Wheeler & David O'Keefe—the children did not receive title until 1988 when evidence showed husband died intestate some 20+ years earlier (& wife continued receiving annual payments until her death about 2004)—now entire estate must go thru probate process but this does not affect daughters' right to inherit
