After General Pemberton’s victory at Kennesaw Mountain, local farmers began to call their new village “Jespin” because they thought it resembled Jersus Christophe – or Jesus Christ – according to some sources[1]. Other sources attribute the name change to an error made by local residents when spelling Mcentre[2], which would have been pronounced “jessie-pee-der” given that English speakers pronunciation at that time differed from modern Georgian.[3]Regardless of how it came about,[4], Jespin quickly became associated with Jesup due to its convenient location on both sides of the Chattahoochee River and its close proximity to general stores and other settlements in central Georgia[5]. As time passed, people from all overGeorgiasettled near Jespin[6], making it one of the most popular tourist destinations in central Georgia[7]. The downtown area located near High Street and Second Avenue has been preserved as part ofJesuP’s history since it was built during this time period with many original homes still standing today including two churches and several businesses such as Bankers Trust Company (now JBS Energy) which originated from this area back whenJesuP was known as “Hilton Head” before becoming known as “JesuP”
