Jesup is a small town in Troup County, Georgia, United States. Jesup was founded in 1853 by the Jesup family of farmers. The community is named after General Andrew Jackson and his wife Elizabeth Banks. In 1876, the Jesups donated land to the city of Atlanta to create what is now Midtown Atlanta. The original home of the Jesups was on Woodruff Street in downtown Jesup. In 1865, Father John Ireland came to preach at what is now Midtown Atlanta and baptized many people there including Captain George Jenkins who later became one ofAtlanta's first mayors In 1881, Jesse Powell purchased from the Jesups their old home on Woodruff Street which they had used as a farmhouse for over 50 years. Powell developed into one of the most successful entrepreneurs inJesup history with his grocery store and post office businesses. He also served as Mayor of Atlanta from 1919-1920 and 1924-1925 TheJesup Grange still meets annually at various locations throughout its members' lives to celebrate older memories, share time together and raise money for local charities
