Jesup, Georgia is a town located in Macon County, Georgia. The population was 1,546 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Athens-Clarke County Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first Hard Gun Case was a shootout between two groups of outlaws on October 12th, 1881. The event took place near what is now Jesup High School. The gun battle resulted in the death of one gunman and the wounding of three others. In addition to this event, it helped solidify law and order in Jesup by providing a deterrent against future robberies and attacks. In 1870 Jesup had 1,024 residents and development began to occur rapidly; by 1880 it had grown to 3,000 people. By 1900 Jesup had 4,000 residents and its industries included furnituremaking, printing publishing and mercantile activities. In 1911 Jesseups post office was discontinued due to prohibition and it reopened in 1917 under the name of Pauldingville after J. Bowers Paulding President of Atlanta Business League which controlled that city's post office at that time. In 1933 the post office closed completely when Atlantas municipal government merged with Georgia State Universitys system (later renamed Georgia Tech). Today there are only two telephone directories listed for Jesseups – one from 1913 and one from 1933 – both showing as defunctsites without any further information provided about them other than their dates of closure. The town center is located just off US-27 south of downtown Fulton County on a wide strip of rural land bordered by creek beds on three sides (northwest side), creek beds on two others sides (southwest side), current railroad tracks running through it on one side (east side), agricultural land lying between these strips on another three sides (northeast side), woods stretching along most or all of this east-southwest border except for a cleared plot within reason extending intouck Creek which forms part of north-central section including much more recently developed neighborhoods adjacent thereto such as Vine City Park esthetically pleasing horse race trackitty golf courserette water treatment plant existing since before 1800s
Jesup was founded in 1837 by General George Jesup, who served as the commanding general of Georgia during the American Civil War. The town and surrounding area were destroyed in a fire in 1839, but Jesup was re-founded two years later. The first store in Jesup opened in 1845. By 1870, over 20 businesses had been established in the town. In 1879, Jesup became an incorporated city.
