In 1912, an oil well was drilled near Jesup and production began bringing money to the town which helped to keep it afloat during difficult times. In 1927,Jesups football team upset #2 Sewanee 38-6 for their third straight year before playing their home game at Stonehaven Stadium which seats 10,000 spectators very quickly becoming one of the most popular evening events in Atlantas history having also been featured in such nationally televised games as College Football Playoff National Championship Game (January 4th), Super Bowl LI (February 5th) and World Cup Qualifier (June 14th). In 1945,Captain John's son Lieutenant John J.Jesus Jr., USMC serving with Japan's 6th Marine Division landed at Iwo Jima after being dropped off by parachute over Okinawa on October 151945 during Operation Crossroads; he later died as a result of injuries sustained while landing on Iwo Jima%. Lieutenant John's mother Mrs. Mary Kizer set up shop next door to Mrs Marys' husband Mr Joe Kizer's barber shop until 1946 when she closed her business due to lack of customers despite her extensive marketing efforts including placing newspapers all over town proclaiming "Happy Mothers Day" throughout the campaign season; Mrs Kizers plaque still remains today outside her old home next door from where she served as event manager for many years starting late 1949 through early 1970 oversaw all aspects from start to finish from morning until night consisting of flowers & cake arrangements services until retiring after celebrating Mothers Day inside with friends Saturday morning following service Mrs Kizers funeral took place Sunday afternoon 2nd floor meeting room left wing hallway at old post office
Jesup is a town in and the county seat of Jesup County, Georgia, United States. The population was 1,912 at the 2010 census. Jesup was first settled by Georgians in 1802. It became a part of the newly formed United States in 1783. The first post office at Jesup was established in 1819. In 1830, Jesup had a population of 350 people and was included within Russell County. However, due to Indian removal policies, the community rapidly declined over the next several decades and only attained a small population again until 1880 when it reached its current size with 1,500 people. In 1891 Jesup's largest employer-based business enterprise was founded as Jardine Mills which manufactured bricks for local homes and churches. By 1910 Jardine Mills employed 2200 workers out of a totalJesup workforce of 6000+. In 1907–08 Jesse Peele organized an unsuccessful campaign for Jackson County Sheriff against incumbent C F Hargrave who had held the office since 1892. Peele ran on an anti-corruption platform which called for abolition of county government including sheriff's office and all civil courts except probate court; establishment of grand juries throughout the county; prohibition on alcoholic beverages being sold or consumed within one mile of any public building; punishment for lawbreakers with up to 10 years imprisonment and/or $5000 fine; strict regulation of interior wiring within jails and penitentiaries; development control over land usage through creation or exclusionary zoning ordinances which limited white settlement while increasing black settlements)
