Jesup was founded in 1794 by Captain James Jesup, a British hero of the American Revolution. The community developed around a small trading post and mill. By 1853, Jesup had a population of 1,500 and was home to a cotton gin, sawmill, gristmill and lumberyard. In 1869 Jesup became the seat of government for Muscogee County. In 1915, Jesup was acquired by the Georgia Department of Transportation and renamed Jesup Station. In 1922 the station was closed and all operations were transferred to nearby Marietta. During World War II the station served as an airfield for the United States Air Force's Tuskegee Airmen. After the war it reverted back to its original name - Jesup Station - until it closed again in 1987. Today, only traces remain of the trading post/mill that once thrived here at Jesup Station; however, visitors can still visit the old mill building on State Route 309 which is now used as a museum.
The Jesup community was located in what is now Jesup, Georgia. It was founded by white settlers in the late 18th century and first populated by Cherokee Americans. In 1815, the Jesup area became part of the federal Territory of Atlanta. The town developed rapidly due to its location near a series of military posts and its close proximity to railroads. By 1870, Jesup had a population of over 1,000 people and was home to several churches and schools. In 1906, Jesup voters elected their first black mayor, James Hillman.
