Jesup is a small town in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains, about an hour and a half from Atlanta. Jesup is one of the oldest towns in Georgia and has been around for over 300 years. The primary industries in Jesup are agriculture and timber. Today, Jesup is a community of about 1,500 people who are primarily farmers and ranchers. The first settlers to Jesup were Quakers who came from Lancaster County, Pennsylvania in 1795. The name "Jesup" was given to the town by General James Wilkinson during his campaign against Creek Indians in 1802. At that time, Wilkinson's troops burned down several villages in what is now downtown Jesup because they could not find anyone to take possession of the land. In 1814, Jesse Jones purchased twelve thousand acres of land east of Jesup from Abraham Baldwin for $1 per acre. In 1815ajohn Fenton became Sheriff of Coffee County after winning a race against Abel Whitehead for sheriffship. When Fenton took office, he organized the first school in Georgia which was located on present-day Fourth Street in downtown Jesupsville (now part of Roswell). In 1816ajohn Fenton married Sarah Cline and they moved to live at 419 Third Street where they raised their six children: Jesse (1817-1909), John (1820-1885), Alice (1822-1900), Amos (1825-1912), Edward Everett Moultrie Jr.(1827-1920) and Sarah Jane( 1830-1920). In 1830ajohn Fenton bought two hundred acres south of downtown from Moses Wheeler for $10 per acre which made him the wealthiest man in town at that time. For many years thereafter, Jesse Jones held most of the economic resources withinJesuspvilles limits until it was acquired by Andrew Goodman late 1800s when Mobile Electric Railway began service throughJesuspville

The name comes from the Creek word jesus which means "Christ." The town was named for John's older brother, James Jesup. Jesup is located in southwest Fulton County on I-85 between Atlanta and Macon. Jesup has a total area of , making it the smallest municipality in Fulton County by land area. The first settler in Jesup were two families who came from Virginia in 1801: John Jesup and his wife Sarah Goodall. They built a log cabin on what is now side street corner opposite historic Methodist Church (now known as Eighth Street). The first store in town was opened by Jeptha Hargrave on October 15, 1802. In 1804, Jesse Purdy opened a cooperage and blacksmith shop next door to Hargrave's store. In 1807, James Fenton bought some of the land that would become Jesup from Nicholas Gibbs and moved to the community with his family also joining Fenton there soon after they arrived from North Carolina together with their three children: Nancy Ann Fenton (1808-1883), George Washington Fenton (1809-1871) and Anna Maria Fenton (1811-1884). One of James' brothers had married an enslaved woman called Martha Jane whose son George became one of Jesse's assistants when he started working at his father's business which later became known as 'Fenton & Son'.
