Jesup is a town in Fulton County, Georgia, United States. The population was 1,898 at the 2010 census. Jesup is located on the Flint River and is part of the Atlanta metropolitan area. Jesup was named after General George Washington's father-in-law, Major James Jesup. It was founded by Captain John Ransom in 1785 as a trading post on the Chattahoochee River. The first store in Jesup was built on the site of present day Armstrong High School in 1806. A post office called Jesup was established in 1809, and remained in operation until it closed in 1869. In 1865, Jessep merchants formed the Merchants' Association to promote trade with other communities along the Chattahoochee River. In 1868, they erected a log courthouse which still stands today across from Armstrong High School. In 1875, Jessep residents voted to incorporate as a village and became one of only two villages within Fulton County (the other being Lawrenceville). The Village Council adopted its current form of government that year. In 1921, Jesups school district merged into Gwinnett County Schools; however, Greenville Elementary School still remains open as an independent elementary school that serves students grades K-5th grade. In 1925, Jesseups post office opened under its current name after Reverend George Washington Jesup donated $20 for postage stamps which would be used for local deliveries only; this became the first stamp mill west of the Appalachian Mountains and continues to serve as the town's official paper pusher today Jesusop has been known by many different names throughout its history including: Cherokee Nation Settlement (1812-1824), New Jerusalem (1796-1800), Frenchtown Creek Settlement (1799-1800), Indian Territory Settlement (1801-1815), Jno'psippi Landing Site (1805), Caldwellsborough Landing Place (1807-1809), Gadsden Landing Place(1810-1811), Western Branch Creek settlement( 1812). During most of these names' use there was only one year/location given which indicated when they were established or when they changed hands An early map of what is now southern Fulton County dated January 7th 1830 shows Jno'psippi Landing Site listed as Caldwellsborough Landing Place but this probably refers to an earlier site later renamed Jno'psippi Landing Site which may have been near present day Byram where Clearwater Creek flows into Chattahoochee River
