In the 1920s-30s, many new homes were built in Jesup by people interested in moving to the area because of its good schools, well-maintained highways (including US Route 5), easy access to Atlanta (via I-75), and growing economy which led to increased production of agricultural products such as cotton, soybeans, chickens, pigs, etc. In particular, Jesse Peebles began developing his cotton plantations here beginning around 1915; these became some of the largest cotton plantations ever developed outside East Texas/Texas A&M University landBase areas during this time period several miles eastward along I-75 near Decatur Street just south of State Road 249 between Rome Road (CR 248) east of Hwy 12 & CR 347 northwesterly into Cobb County...Peebles became one of America's most powerful figures after World War II through his investments hereabouts including over 50% ownership or controlof all major textile companies expanding throughout much southern orcentral Georgia during this era)...Jesuit still remains oneidaoperated local telephone company providing service within city limits today

At first, only white men were able to attend college here but eventually African Americans also became educated here.
