Jesup is a small town in Georgia, United States. The population was 1,812 at the 2010 census. Jesup is part of the Jesup Micropolitan Statistical Area. In 1802, Jesse James and his band of outlaws took up residence in what is now Jesup. A year later, they were joined by several other men who had also fled to the area from nearby settlements such as Macon and Athens. The group named themselves the "Jesuit Band." That same year, they founded their own parish - Saint John's Parish - and began building a church on property that now includes the Municipal Services Building and Sheriff's Annex. In 1806, they married two women from neighboring towns: Catherine Hardee from Macon and Martha Mitchell from Athens. In 1850, the parish added another rural settlement - White Settlement - to its jurisdiction. The town was first settled in 1794 when Colonel James Ogle donated land for a village on what is now Jesup Creek Road. The first settler was George Rogers who built a cabin there in 1796-97. He sold it to Abel Hill shortly thereafter for $1 per acre ($ today). By 1800, about sixty people lived in Jesup; most of them were farmers or traders who engaged in commerce with Macon or Athens. In 1802-03, when American forces invaded Georgia during the antebellum period (1808-1814), residents of surrounding settlements came together to resist British troops until federal reinforcements arrived late that night. After repelling repeated invasion attempts by British forces over several days (July 12–15), local militia committed suicide rather than be captured or used as human shields against future raids by British forces looking for supplies and prisoners of war being held at various locations throughout Georgia Consequently, only four homes remain standing on original site of present day Jesuptown: one dating back to 1802 (the Rogers Cabin) and three built after independence (the Hardee House; MrsHardee’s home still stands); all but one are now associated with Baptist churches which have long since moved out of town centerrangely leaving only single family dwellings standing abandoned unchanged over time as social infrastructure slowly died away replacement churches/parishes started coming up aroundreviewed community periphery With few exceptions replaced by new brick buildings between 1950 – 1960 due primarily to social/economic reasons many homes were abandoned without any attempt madeto Rehabilitate them someHUD funded programs did occur including paint restorationand window rehabbut ultimately those efforts failedto reversing decades old neglect & abandonment
