In 1946, Jessep resumed production of his original pistols using new technology called gas-operated cartridges (GOC). The GOC system allowed users to reload their guns without having to remove them from use, giving them longer ranges and better accuracy than earlier Breech-loading handguns. In 1837, John Troup purchased from George Jesup 1/3 of an acre (0.20 km²) of what would become Jesup Township.. In 1851, Jesse Pickens bought 1/2 mile (1 km²) east of present-day Jesup from John Troup for $10 dollars (). Pickens named his land "Pickens Station." A post office called Pickens was established in 1852, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1907. A store and hotel were built on the site where today's Eastern Market sits in 1903 by C H Payne & Sons (). Mr. Payne died soon after construction began and had no role in its ultimate success or failure. The business closed when railroad tracks were laid through the town center; however, some current retail customers are traceable back to that time as well... During World War II Japanese forces burned much of downtown Jesseups during their attack on 4 December 1942; this contributing factor to its nickname "The Burning Town". Today only a few remaining bricks remain from that era while most of the buildings have been replaced with more recent structures over time including a high school which opened its doors on October 10th 1966 across from Eastern Market

Jesup was founded on December 3, 1821 by General James Troup and Major John Jesup as part of the Treaty of New Echota. It was named for George Washington Jesup, who had served as an aide-de-camp to President James K. Polk during the American Civil War. In 1868, Jesse Pemberton built a sawmill here that became one of the most important mills in south Georgia. In 1915, Jensensen's Lumber Company bought the mill from Pemberton and continued to operate it until it closed in 1984. The mill is now a museum open to the public. Jesup first attracted attention when its location made it an ideal place to build a stockade around what would become Fort Gaines National Monument in 1865. The fort was built to protect nearby Savannah from Confederate attacks and also served as an observation post for Union troops during the American Civil War. Today, portions of Fort Gaines National Monument areVisitor Center and Old Military Road (formerly State Route 124), while other parts are used for housing and commercial purposes including portions of HistoricJesup Development Zone which fronts Park Avenue NW., between US Highways 24 & 25A The town began growth after settlers arrived here from northeast Georgia in 1820 with plans to build a wagon road from central Georgia through western Jackson County into what would become Atlanta metropolitan area; however this venture failed because there were no available land or water sources near Athens or Decatur for such a large project and transportation difficulties led to its termination without ever reaching fruition
