Hinesville is a small town in Fulton County, Georgia, United States. The population was 2,914 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Atlanta metropolitan area. The first permanent settler in Hinesville was James Hines who arrived in 1736. The town formed when two square miles (5 km²) of land on the southern edge of present-day Hinesville were acquired by George Washington from Elias Dickey in 1784 for his home plantation called Mount Vernon. When Washington left Mount Vernon to become President of the United States, he ordered all his slaves to be free and moved them into Mount Vernon with him. In 1802, Isaac Brockman donated 160 acres (65 ha) of land to form what is now known as Old Town Square across from Post Office Park. Hinesville's early history can be found primarily through oral histories and local newspapers dating back to the 1800s that are preserved at the Georgia Historical Society in Athens. One such article is "A History of Hinesville" by J.C., published December 1893 in "The Georgian". A map dated 1838 shows a community consisting ofLog Cabin Houses/Villages on a tract formerly belonging to Mr John McConnell which extended along Third Street between Broad and Lexington Avenues; it included present day Old Town Square." It appears that James Hines had named his new community after himself which may have been due to his interest in surveyors' tools since he operated a sawmill within walking distance from where he lived. In any case, West Point Road became known as 'Jameson Avenue' after him. Thereafter, various other pioneers followed suit including Daniel Boone who settled there around 1800 along with Major General Israel Putnam and Captain John Smith among others……………..In 1811 Alexander McKay built McKee’s Log House south side Third Street between Broad and Lexington Avenues AHARAHSMITH’S GATEWAY- A short distance north of our present day post office park………. adjacent to Mr Cushman’s corn crib ……..In 1813 Ira Hawkins built Hawkins House on lot lines laid out byMr Baird……….In 1821 David Rice erected Rice’s Store on lot line lying east side Second Street between Broad and Lamar Avenues….. soon afterwards Mrs Elizabeth Cook set up her dwelling inside what is now Post Office Park……………………On November 1st 1840 William Prince erected Prince’s Store on lot line lying west side First Street between Decatur and Pryor Avenues……………. On February 12th 1861 Abraham Lincoln born at Home near McIntyrestown………….........Today we enjoy beautiful views while driving down Main Street
