Hinesville is a small town located in Glynn County, Georgia, United States. The population was 1,848 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Atlanta metropolitan area. The first settler in Hinesville was James Dickey in 1821. Hinesville was platted in 1827 by Captain John Lewis and his wife Priscilla; it was named after General Robert E. Hines who had been killed during the War of 1812. Early residents were farmers and traders with connections to Savannah and Charleston, South Carolina. They relied on transportation through railroads to get their goods to market. During Reconstruction, many African Americans moved into the town; this led to tensions between white and black residents that continue to this day. In 1870, Reverend Aiken founded First Baptist Church which remains one of Hinesville's most popular denominations today. In 1865, Dr George Washington Dixon opened a general store in what is now the south end of town; he became known for his grocery items such as breads and candy bars that he sold door-to-door from his wagon throughout the town. Dixon also built several homes around his store including one still standing on Main Street today known as "Dixon's House". He served as mayor of Hinesville from 1898-1900 and 1912-1914 when he ran unsuccessfully for office against incumbent Mayor William Burtis Jr.. In 1929, Howard Hughes purchased land near what is now Grady Memorial Hospital which would later become Hughes Air Force Base (HAFB). In 1933–1935, construction began on what would become Payne Field – home to both USAAF fighter pilots training at RAF Motegi during World War II (the airbase also played host to other military activities such as artillery bombardment) – while work continued on runway 36L/24R adjacent to AFB until 1944 when it was closed due to enemy action nearby; however all activity stopped abruptly upon its opening because of World War II reactivation orders only few weeks later!
