Hinesville is a small town in Cobb County, Georgia, located on the Chattahoochee River. The population was 1,471 at the 2010 census. The name of the town is derived from Hines Hill, a mountain peak that overlooks the town. The first settler in Hinesville was James Hines, who arrived in 1795. He built a cabin on what is now Cemetery Road and started farming around this time. By 1810, Hinesville had a population of about twenty-five people. In 1811, John Chapman purchased land east of present-day Highway 231 and began to develop it into a community with homes, stores and churches. In 1819–20, George Washington Glover settled in what is now north side of Church Street in Hinesville. Glover founded the first school in Cobb County and donated land for it on the west side of Church Street near where present day Schoolhouse Road meets Chapel Pike. The school occupied an area that is now part of Museum Park off I-75 south of downtown Atlanta. In 1830–31, Thomas Jarratt moved to Hinesville from Milledgeville and opened his store there soon after purchasing property behind what is now Present Day Courthouse Square (now Courthouse Drive). Jarratt also served as postmaster for several years before starting his own mercantile business along Church Avenue between Decatur Boulevard and Macon Avenue in 1837 which he called "The old Jarratt Store." In 1840–41 when Cobb County was organized into districts by General Andrew Jackson's Executive Order No., all residents within District No., then known as Northeast Cobb County were required to move to District No., then known as East Cobb County if they did not have property within District No.. This order applied only to citizens who owned land within districts instead of mere citizens owning nothing within districts.. From 1840 until 1842 both Jarratt Stores operated out of Oneida Court House which was completed early that year across from today's courthouse square on Patton Avenue (present day Courthouse Drive). When Oneida Court House burned down during Indian Removal operations in1843 it became apparent that such an open air structure would be unsafe so Jarratts decided against rebuilding and leasedCourthouse Square back to the county for use as a jail until it could be repaired or replaced; this occurred between March 2nd and May 2nd 1840 About this time William Neely also established himself locally here serving as justice of peace . From this point forward most civic activity took place out front at courthouse square rather than inside building because courthouses were either unoccupied or unsafe during these times . In 1865 following Reconstruction local white farmers revolted against Reconstruction policies by forming a new government -the Confederate Governmentof Georgia-. This government lasted until April 12th 1870 when it fell due largely to lack supplies & military support from neighboring states led by Union general Nathan Bedford Forrest & Ulysses S Grant) Aftermath: Many buildings including courthouse burned down while many people were deported or fled into Native American reservations
