Hinesville is a small town in south central Georgia, United States. The population was 1,575 at the 2010 census. It is located on the Chattahoochee River and has a total area of just 2.2 square miles (6.4 km²). The name Hinesville comes from the Creek word "hine", meaning "a low place." The town was founded by General James Hinson in 1824 as part of a military post he established on the Chattahoochee River to prevent Native Americans from raiding white settlements downstream. By 1830, Hinesville had developed into a small community with multiple stores and 30 residents when it became the county seat of Cobb County in 1831. In 1835, General Andrew Jackson moved his army upriver to defeat Indian forces besieging Atlanta and General Nathan Bedford Forrest took control of Cobb County; Hinesville fell within Forrest's domain. In 1865, during Reconstruction, Hinesville became an important center for black cotton growers who were barred from voting but were able to trade goods with white farmers. Blacksmiths and carpenters helped build roads and bridges in what is now metro Atlanta during this time period. In 1870, locals formed their own school board which allowed for more than one African American teacher to teach in each classroom; this led to increased integration of local schools during the late 1800s and early 1900s. However, race-based discrimination continued until after World War II when African Americans were granted full civil rights by Congress under President Franklin D. Roosevelt's New Deal program

Hinesville is a town in Fulton County, Georgia, United States. The population was 2,812 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Fulton County. Hinesville has been called "The Glass City" for its prevalence of glass manufacturing and other industries. The first white settlers in what would become Hinesville arrived in 1805 and built a log cabin on the now-defunct Post Road. In 1811, they named their new town after Major General John Cushing, who had fought in the War of 1812 and was later made a brigadier general under Ulysses S. Grant. In 1839, Judge Joseph Hines donated land to help build an academy to educate African American students east of Atlanta. The school eventually became known as Tuskegee Institute; it closed in 1972 but reopened as historically black Aiken School in 2009 after years of fundraising. Hinesville's history goes back even further than this – its name comes from Captain James Dickey who was instrumental in organizing the 1st Regiment Georgia Volunteer Infantry during the US Civil War (1861–1865). He also donated land to create a military cemetery that still exists today on which many soldiers are buried today including Confederate Generals Robert Ewell Lee and Thomas Johnson Randolph among others (pictured right).
Hinesville was founded in 1859 by William Hines and his wife, Catharine. The town grew rapidly during the 1860s and 1870s due to its location on the railroad and its access to markets in the surrounding area. In 1874, Hinesville became a city thanks to passage of a law by Georgia's legislature granting city status to towns with a population of ten thousand or more. By 1910, Hinesville had reached twenty-one thousand residents and was considered one of the most prosperous small towns in Georgia. However, World War I caused significant economic decline for Hinesville during the war years; however, growth resumed after the war and saw continued prosperity through the 1920s. During this time, Hinesville also became known for its annual Fairs which attracted many visitors from throughout southeast Georgia. Despite these successes, however, it is generally agreed that World War II caused significant social and economic decline for Hineville as factories closed down and unemployment rose. In recent decades, though not without struggle, efforts have been made to revive some aspects of local culture including traditional music festivals and arts programs as well as support for local businesses.
