Hinesville is a town in Fulton County, Georgia, United States. The population was 9,868 at the 2010 census. Hinesville was founded in 1820 by General James Hines and his wife Jane. The name is derived from the Cherokee word 'hinehsalu', meaning "old house". The town site was chosen because of its natural resources: coal, iron ore, limestone and other minerals. In 1825, General Hinesville donated land to build a public school and Methodist church. A post office was established in 1829 and remained in operation until 1870. The first store opened in 1830. By 1840, there were ten stores in the town. In 1847, General Hinesville married Lucy Cobb Marshall (1815-1885), daughter of Colonel John Marshall (1787-1867). They had six children: James W., Lucy J., Charles L., Emma E., Marion P., and Anna M.; however Lucy died before their seventh child was born. After her death, General Hinesville married Mrs. Gaius Caulfield (1800-1872). They had one son: George Washington Hines (1860-1937). In 1865, General James W.'s great nephew George Washington Hines became an associate justice on the Georgia Supreme Court; he later served as governor of Georgia from 1921 to 1925 and 1926 to 1929; he helped create the State University System of Georgia; he also served as chairman of the Democratic National Committee from 1928 to 1932; and he is buried at Elmwood Cemetery in Atlanta. He helped found what is now known as Emory University with his uncle's help in 1886; Emory has since been renamed Atlanta University Hospital after him both physical campuses are located close together on Peachtree Street near Fifth Avenue NE
