The town began as a simple log cabin settlement called "Crawford" near where today's Bank of America building stands and gradually grew into an important trading post on the Chattahoochee River between Atlanta and Chattanooga . In 1845, local citizens voted to name their new town after Captain John Hines – one of many Americans serving in various capacities with General Jackson’s army during that war including Major General James Knox Polk – following his return home from Mexico City . In 1865 Confederate forces burned down most of Crawford Village while retreating fromAtlanta; all but four homes survived thanks to friendly Native Americans living nearby until they were resettled by whites some years later. At approximately this time, much of north Fulton County including present day Hineville fell within Union lines as result of US military campaigns against Confederate forces throughout eastern Georgia .
