Hinesville is a town in Macon County, Georgia, United States. The population was 5,857 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Atlanta metropolitan area. Hinesville is located on the Chattahoochee River and has a humid subtropical climate. The first permanent settler in what became Hinesville was John Pate in 1810. By 1812, Hinesville had a blacksmith shop and three storehouses, all built by local white settlers for trade with Native Americans who lived on the Chattahoochee River. A post office was established at Hinesville in 1821, and by 1830 it had a population of about 50 residents. In 1831–32, General Andrew Jackson's forces passed through Macon County on their way tools Campaign against Mobile Bayou Indians west of Athens (Ala.), destroying most of the rural infrastructure that supported slavery in Georgia. This event helped spur development around central Macon County as cotton plantations were developed to provide food for slave owners while they fought against Indian attacks; this also led to increased trade between northern Georgia and southern Alabama because cotton could be bought legally instead of being traded or kidnapped from Native Americans like many other commodities did then. Hinesville began growing rapidly after James Kenedy founded a small flour mill near present-day downtown Hinesville in 1840; over time other mills were founded throughout central Macon County until only one remained open until 1956: JHart Mill which still operates today with approximately 100 employees making flour products including breads, buns and rolls apprximately). In 1850 Samuel Morse established his telegraph line from Milledgeville to Decatur; this allowed farmers living north of Decatur to sell goods directly to customers south of MilledgeVILLE without having to go through Atlanta or Mobile Bayou (thus improving transportation available for businesses). During the American Civil War (1861–1865), large numbers of soldiers came through central Macon County looking for supplies and worked farms owned by Union sympathizers such as Levi Coffin (the father-in-law of Confederate general Robert Ewell) or David Dudley Field (the brother-in-law of Ulysses S Grant). Many blacks also enlisted in army service during this time period; many freedmen who had been born into slavery found themselves unable to find work due to lack of education or an ability to read or write so they enlisted as infantry officers or artillery men – some even achieving military rank such as major General Nathan Bedford Forrest (whom President Abraham Lincoln appointed Secretary Of War after he relieved Forrest from command following his Raid on Vicksburg). As enrollment at public schools decreased overall due to restrictions placed upon them by Confederate authorities, African American students increasingly served as teachers rather than attending school themselves. The railroad arrived in 1865 when Alexander Stephens laid down track between Decatur and Athens along what is now Interstate 25/Highways 98 & 98A; this opened up new markets for agricultural produce outside Atlanta proper while helping support economic development around central Macon County which would continue expanding until World War II when populations reached 10 million people! In 1870 HinesVILLE FIREHouse burned down but never rebuilt...it still stands today just across street from old High School building!
