Hinesville is a town located in Decatur County, Georgia, United States. The population was 12,521 at the 2010 census. It is the largest settlement in Decatur County and the second most populous community in Clayton County. The Hinesville post office was established on December 12, 1819, by James Hines and his wife Sally (Dickson). The first settler in what is now Hinesville was John McNaught who arrived in 1794. In 1818, Andrew Baldwin erected a log cabin on what is now State Route 2. He named it 'Hine's Ferry'. A year later he built another cabin near the present day intersection of Old US-2/US-27 and SR-1. He named this one 'Baldwin's Ferry'. In 1823, George Washington Carver settled down alongSR-1 west of present day Hinesville at what is now Tomlinson Mills. Carver owned six hundred acres (240 ha) of land around present day Hinesville that he used for farming, hunting and grazing his animals. He also built a two story log house with some rooms still standing today known as the Carver House Museum which served as his home from 1824 to 1886 when he moved to Tuskegee Institute near Atlanta. In 1840s locally born lawyer Dillard Garland operated Garland’s Mill where corn meal and flour were produced for local consumption until about 1870 when it became an agricultural storehouse converted into residential use called Garland’s Park which included four houses on three acres (12 ha) east of Main Street today known as Garland Manor apartments condos etc., since 1974 part of University Village developments close to I-285 exits 287E & 289W . Just south of US 27 across from current Day Walmart there once stood an old plantation mansion known as Eastern Star Plantation currently used by University Village development employees parking lot next door plus several sheds & outbuildings visible from main street

The first settlers in Hinesville were James and Sally (Smithers) Hines who arrived in 1802 from Wales. They built a log cabin on what is now State Route 321. John Crouch founded the grocery store here in 1853 and it was later known as The Grosse Pointe Store. In 1865, Mr. & Mrs. Neely bought land at what is now Elm Street and built a frame home which they named "Hinesville". They occupied it until their death in 1922). The Smithers family left behind an extensive genealogy that includes numerous descendants living all over the country including people who currently live in Hinesville. In 1915, when Hinesville had a population of only 100 people, one of its citizens, Jens Larson set up a gas station on Airport Boulevard just east of town limits to serve the local farms and farmers with gasoline and oil products during World War I shortages caused by America's involvement in that conflict. Through his efforts, HinesVILLE became an important transportation center for rural Gwinnett County during those early years of war as well as providing jobs for many local residents who supplied goods to military camps located around the county during those hostilities This period also saw some growth within the community as young men from nearby Douglas County began attending agricultural colleges preparatory to becoming farmhands orchardists or miners after serving their national service- something that was then very difficult for Georgians not residing within these counties to do without experiencing economic hardship . In 1954 when airport Boulevard became GA Highway 95A- commonly called simply "GA 95" following rerouting by Highway officials- HinesVILLE again experienced some growth as several new businesses opened up including Peddle hardware store (later Sears), Belk's department store (now Macy's), Bankers Trust Company (! banks back then), post office (now PeachtreeBank) and finally First National Bank where Jens Larson had opened hisGas Station earlier that year . This latter institution would remain operational until 1990 when it closed due to lack of patronage It wasn't until 1990 when First National Bank building burned down leaving no choice but for PEachtreeBank predecessor TIAA US hailing from Alpharetta - which today still operates out front - to take over operations instead creating thus another era of growth within this once struggling community
