Hinesville is a town in Grady County, Georgia, United States. The population was 7,813 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Athens-Clarke County Combined Statistical Area. Hinesville was laid out by Colonel John Hines in 1818 and named for him. In 1824, it became the county seat of Grady County after it was moved from Griffin to Hinesville from Lumpkin County. The first courthouse in Hinesville was built in 1830 and burned down in 1831. A new courthouse was built and opened in 1848; it served until 1959 when it was replaced by the current building. The first post office in Hinesville opened on December 13, 1830, under the name "Griffin". It continued operating until May 3, 1836 when it became "Hine'svillet". It then changed its name to "Hine'svillet" again on October 15, 1837 before becoming "Grantham" on October 20th of that year. On January 1st of 1861, Grady Countywas reorganized into Hinds County with Grantham as its new county seat; however, Hinds County ceased to exist on April 15th of that year due to within-county consolidation which took place in Alabama that year. On November 2nd 1870 a fire destroyed most of downtown Gadsden during a tornado outbreak; only one store remained standing which reopened two days later after being repaired by local farmers using their own resources The population of Hinesville peaked at 10,083 on October 25th 1923 when all energy services were discontinued due to low demand caused by World War II After several years without any major changes or growth the population slid below 6500 during the late 1990s through no real change other than births and deaths By 2000 there were just over 4200 people living within city limits while less than 1300 lived outside those boundaries
