Over time various other businesses have moved into downtown Hinesville such as Price Chopper Department Store (now Home Depot), Buttermilk Bake House (now Courtyard Buffet), Pimento's Pizza Place (now Hardee's), Fidelity Investments branch office, Carlsbad Caverns tourist attraction, and many others including two medical clinics: Memorial Hospital & Medical Center (opened 1962) and Grady Memorial Hospital (opened 1973). Many residents also started their own businesses such as an ice cream parlor called D'Angelo's Creamery or a gas station/convenience store named The News Stand which still operates today across from Central Park Elementary School. In recent years several new apartment complexes have been built near downtown making it easier for people to live close to everything that they need without leaving town center! The name Hinesville is derived from an early settler, Dr. James Hines, who named it after his father-in-law's family home near Hillsboro in neighboring Gwinnett County. The first inhabitants of what would become Hinesville were Native American Removal Indians who inhabited the area for centuries before European settlement began in the 17th century. In 1802, Major General Andrew Jackson and a force of Confederate veterans invaded Georgia to overthrow its pro-Union government and established themselves as a new nation under the Provisional Government of Alabama led by Jackson's brotherly friend John Crain. When Federal troops arrived to quash this insurrection, they discovered Indian settlements around present day Hinesville and ordered all residents to leave or face military punishment. A select few brave enough to stay hid underneath their homes until help arrived were able to rebuild their homes over time while others fled into exile or captivity. The first post office was established at present day Hinesville in 1828 service was primarily via stagecoach transportation between Atlanta and Decatur; however mail delivery continued until 1865 when railroads became available throughout much of thesouthwest US. One local tradition maintains that on May 15th 1865 Union soldiers burned down plantation owner Ebenezer Lamb's house during a skirmish in what is now known as "TheBattle of White Station". After years of economic decline due mostly to farming mechanization which undercut traditional agriculture practices, milling operations began along with heavy industry throughout the late 19th century resulting in rapid population growth graphically reflected by increased production values associated with such endeavors as automobiles, radios and agricultural equipment becoming prevalent within just a few generations following prohibition (the last major impact on white residentpopulations occurred during Reconstruction). In 1908 developer Prentice Cole purchased 8 acres east of current day downtown for $1 million which he used as land for his new subdivision called "Gables." However it wasn't until 1916 when he donated another piece of property - now known as "Collins Corner" - located northeast cornerof Elm Street and Grayson Avenue NW which served as an elementary school before eventually being renamed Polytechnic High School after incorporation into Auburn University , making it one of only two high schools remaining today within city limits (the other being Valdosta State Community College ). Although originally designed primarily for boys there have been various girls' high schools established within city limits since then including Grady Memorial High School (opened in 1976) followed by Centennial Christian Academy (opened in 1998), providing opportunities for more diverse student populations not confined solely unto male/female boundaries . Although most citizens still reside within city limits although some suburban areas are annexed into central City Limits through special legislation these days there remains significant diversity both racially / ethnically & economically amongst registered voters
