In 1847, Governor Nathan Bedford Forrest established what is now known as Old Fourth Ward School District #2 here and named it after General Andrew Jackson's home county, Tennessee (now Alabama). Hinesville has been heavily impacted by the Civil War with over 100 buildings lost or destroyed as a result of battle or siege operations. The town had to be abandoned for many years due to damage but it was finally rebuilt following World War II and today it offers some great attractions for visitors such as its natural springs, history museum, and beautiful architecture from its early days until today.

During this time, many famous people lived or worked in Hinesville including Nathan Bedford Forrest and David Walker Johnston. In 1870, Hinesville became part of Conyers County and until 1975 it remained an unincorporated community within Conyers County with its own government but no schools or businesses
