The first permanent settler in Hinesville was Dr. John Smedley who arrived in 1790 and named it after his home town of Hitchin, England. Hinesville grew rapidly due to its location on the main highway connecting Atlanta with other parts of Georgia and Alabama. In 1835, cotton plantations were established around what is now Hinesville and other nearby towns including Decatur and Fayetteville. In 1855, a toll road (the Chattahoochee Valley Railroad) was built through the community to connect with the new railroad line running south from Chattanooga via Athens-Clarke County and then into central Georgia. This helped stimulate economic development in Hinesville which by 1860 had reached a peak with over 1,500 residents and 90 businesses. However, during the Civil War there was great destruction as much of downtown was destroyed by Confederate forces while most of the cotton plantations were burned down or abandoned due to lack of food or resources needed for war effort. Hinesville is a town in Cobb County, Georgia, United States. The population was 6,813 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Atlanta metropolitan area. Hinesville was founded on November 3, 1824 by John C. Hines and his wife Nancy L. Hines as a post office in what is now Cobb County. The name "Hinesville" is derived from Indian Chief Honesa's birthplace, which was located near present-day Hinesville. The first settler in what would become Hinesville was John C. Hine who came overland from Tennessee in 1824 and named his new community after General James Shields' birthplace of Paulding County, Alabama (now Mobile). In 1825 Captain Samuel Troup moved to the area with his family and built a cabin on Old Fort Hill about two miles north of where modern-day downtown stands today. By 1830 there were 10 families living in the village site including six farmers, four mechanics and two blacksmiths; all of whom had homesteads around the creek that formed the nucleus of present-day downtown streetscape today.Captain Troup's daughter Polly married Reuben Wheeler who settled near what became Coxe Square (now south side of downtown) in 1830; their son Amos took up land east of their original home on Third Street NW before moving to northwest corner lot donated by Elijah Weeks for brickyards just northeast of current day Depot Square/Old Courthouse Plaza – one block west of where First Baptist Church now stands – in 1834 In 1836 Captain Troup's widow sold her holdings to Jno Pritchard and others for $1,500 cash plus 40 acres (16 ha) southeast boundary line then described as “site or plantation” (later survey map). This location served as early courthouse square until it was razed during construction of Peachtree Street SW between Marietta Avenue NE and Constitution Avenue NW in 1865–66 – groundbreaking ceremonies occurred at that intersection on October 9th 1865 under Confederate Lt Col Nathan Bedford Forrest Jr., later Grant Wood aide de camp during Sherman's march through Georgia that same year stunning many onlookers with its grandeur! Mrs. Troup died shortly thereafter due to yellow fever contracted while visiting friends downriver at Fayetteville Mill Aftermath: A Graveyard?
