There has been a history of shooting and eye protection in Griffin, Georgia. Shooting began in the early 1800s when settlers in the area started using shotguns to hunt game. By the late 1800s, rifle shootings had become common and people began wearing eye protection to reduce casualties from gunfire.
Griffin is a small town in Georgia, located on the banks of the Chattahoochee River. The population was 5,815 at the 2010 census. Griffin is part of the Athens–Clarke County School District and is home to the Griffins football team which has won four state championships since it formed in 1907. The Griffins were founded in 1907 by two brothers, George and Griggs Griffin, who built a log cabin on what's now their family farmstead. The first school in Griffin was opened in 1915. Today, Griffin Elementary School and Griffin High School offer education for students from pre-kindergarten through twelfth grade. In addition to its educational opportunities, Griffin offers businesses and residents access to various forms of economic development such as manufacturing, retail sales, banking/finance services, health care services and more. As one of only a few townships within Athens–Clarke County with an elementary school that also offers high school classes (Griffin Senior High School closed in 2006), Griffin has long been known as one of the most vibrant communities in southern Georgia – home to both physically active adults and children who enjoy playing sports or watching local athletes compete; people who appreciate Historically Black Colleges & Universities (HBCUs) like Morehouse College; people who are involved with their local community theaters or churches; as well as those whose primary focus lies outside of town boundaries but still within Athens–Clarke County’s sphere of influence. Griffin was founded in 1784 by John Griffin, a United States congressman. The town was named after Griffin's father, George Washington Griffin. The Griffins were prominent Quakers who had emigrated from Pennsylvania to Georgia in the late 1700s. They organized the first Methodist Church in the state and donated land for a courthouse and school. In 1802, they donated another piece of land for a cotton gin and gristmill. In 1805, they erected a dam on the Chattahoochee River so that they could produce more cotton than ever before. By 1830, Griffin had become one of the most prosperous cities in Georgia with over 100 businesses and 400 families. It was during this time that it became known as "The Athens of the South." In 1832, Andrew Jackson became president of the United States and began an aggressive expansionism which caused many southern counties to secede from the Union. This led to James Kenedy becoming secretary of war under Jackson and ordering all military installations throughout Georgia to be turned over to him within six months. Kenedy also ordered all private property be seized and redistributed among his own friends or family members. This drastic action caused great hardship for Griffin's citizens and forced them to sell their homes, businesses, mills etc., into debtors' prison until finally being released in 1865 when Reconstruction ended without causing any real damage to either side while creating numerous new problems for both regions simultaneously – Problems such as racism which persisted until well into the 21st century; economic instability which has plagued much of rural America since then; large minorities living primarily in poverty without access to education or jobs; significant African American population growth (estimated at 60% between 1840-1920) despite never achieving majority status); etc.).
