In 1860, during the American Civil War, Confederate General Nathan Bedford Forrest captured Griffin while its residents were attending a wedding in nearby Lawrenceville. The city's strategic location on theAtlanta–Fulton Railroad made it an important military target for Union forces during the war; Sherman's March on Atlanta resulted in its fall in 1865. Afterward, many slaves were freed and some families left to form their own communities within present-day Gwinnett County or West Georgia; most Griffins eventually returned to farming or cattle ranching after Reconstruction ended in America. However, many African Americans continued working as sharecroppers until well into the 21st century

This new interest led Tooey & Sons company founder John Tye to begin developing rifle telescopes based on his oil refineries designs. By 1850, Tye had produced three models: 1) Aperture field magnifying glass or "Tey Eye"; 2) Aperture wide-angle microscope; 3) Aperture close-up microscope or "Tooey scope." The development of rifle scopes began slowly but surely during the late 1800s thanks largely to advances in technology from European manufacturers. Griffin was born on December 21, 1859, in the town of Milledgeville, Georgia. Griffin attended schools in Milledgeville and then studied law at the University of Alabama. After practicing law for a few years, he moved to Griffin in 1902 and started his own practice. Griffin was an active member of the Democratic Party and served as mayor of Griffin from 1916 to 1920. He also worked as a judge for several years. In 1932, he was elected to the United States Senate and served until his death on November 9, 1948. During his time in the Senate, Griffin helped pass important laws such as the National Labor Relations Act and Social Security Amendments.
