The town grew rapidly due to its location on the Chattahoochee River between Marietta and Duluth. By 1820, Griffin had a school, Methodist church and three stores. In 1825, the first railway reached Griffin; it became known as "The Crossroads of America". In 1829–30, a group of businessmen built a gristmill on the confluence of the Chattahoochee and Flint rivers. The mill was destroyed by fire in 1831 but replaced by another gristmill in 1840. A sawmill followed in 1850; both mills were destroyed by fire in 1860 but replaced soon afterwards with a cotton gin and distillery that still stands today. A post office called Griffin was established in 1830; it continued until 1906. During World War II, Griffins produced munitions for the United States government; many of these products are now preserved at Fort McAllister National Military Park near Decatur
