Griffin, Georgia is a town in Fulton County, Georgia, United States. It was founded in 1802 by Captain John Griffin and his family. The current version of the town was laid out in 1824. The population was 906 at the 2010 census. In 1802, Captain John Griffin settled near present-day Griffin on a small creek that ran through what is now central Atlanta. Griffins built their first cabin on the banks of the creek and named it after themselves: "John Griffin's Fort". In 1803 they started to build a larger cabin which they named "Griffin's Cabin", then "Griffin House" before finally settling on its current name in 1824. The griffins were symbols of strength and self-reliance for many people in early America. They are also considered icons of downtownAtlanta today because much of what makes the city unique – such as its architecture, parks and restaurants – owes its success to Griffins' hard work and dedication to making it a desirable place to live and work. The community currently has 960 residents, with most being concentrated around downtown where there are several churches (including Saint Matthews Episcopal Church), businesses (including Centennial Bank & Trust Company and Northside Pharmacy), as well as residences including homes dating back to the 1800s along Ponce de Leon Boulevard NE. Downtown also includes two public high schools - GrifFINS Academy Charter School (formerly known as South Cobb High School) and DeKalb County Comprehensive High School - as well as three libraries: one operated by Northwest Atlanta Library District; one operated by Gwinnett County Library System; one by Fulton County Library System/Milton Bradley Branch Library located just north of downtown across from Philips Arena). There are also two grocery stores - Subway sandwich shop at Lakewood Shopping Center located east of I-285 exit 191A off I-85 southbound; Stop & Shop located just west of I-285 exit 191B off I-85 northbound - four convenience stores including Lowe's Home improvement store adjacent to Centennial Bank & Trust Company; six movie theaters: Regal Cinemas across from Philips Arena; AMC locations throughout metro Atlanta; seven food courts: five inside MARTA stations (one stop only - Terminus station); four gas stations plus apothecary shop located within walking distance of all areas except DTIA airport
