Griffin, Georgia is a small city in the U.S. state of Georgia and the county seat of Gwinnett County. As of the 2010 census, its population was 59,567. Griffin is located on the Chattahoochee River within Cobb County, near Atlanta and Decatur. It became a town in 1881 and was incorporated as a city in 1907. In 1966 it merged with adjacent Dunwoody to form the current city of Griffin. The first known inhabitants of what is now Griffin were Native American traders from Alabama who traveled through the area on their way to trade with other tribes along the Chattahoochee River during the early eighteenth century. The town was founded by General James Oglethorpe on April 14, 1881 as part of his effort to build an outpost for troops guarding against possible slave raids in central Georgia. At first, Griffin consisted only of some five hundred people living in rural areas around what is now downtown Griffin and Dunwoody Church (now Dunwoody Mall). Growth began quickly after Oglethorpe's proclamation calling for businesses and citizens to donate land for development within ten miles (16 km) of downtown Athens; within two years, Griffins had reached 1,000 residents and twenty-six businesses had been established. Commercial growth followed suit as entrepreneurs began looking for ways to make money offAtlanta's rapidly growing transportation infrastructure – griffins soon became known as "the Transportables". In 1907 Griffins annexed neighboring Dunwoody which at that time consisted mostly of farmers who leased land from Cobb County for agriculture or built homes on either side of the creek that flowed through their community. When combined with Griffins' existing population of 59,567 people – its largest before annexation – this made Griffin one of America's most populous cities by 1910 Census standards when compared to Newark (New Jersey), Buffalo (New York), St Louis Missouri (stronghold until 1920s), Cincinnati Ohio (largest city until 1940s), Detroit Michigan (largest city until 1950s) and New Orleans Louisiana (largest metropolitan area in North America). With an expanding economy came increasingly dense populations both inside and outside Griffins; according to historian Byron Hawkins Jr., "Griffin surpassed every other municipality [in Atlantans'] size except Atlanta" by 1930 census estimates despite having no paved streets or public transportation available then other than walking or horseback riding

In 1830, Witherspoon's Creek became known as Grifton because some of its founders were related to Jonathan Griftenberger, an early settler in the area. The first schools in Grifton were built between 1830 and 1833. By 1840, Grifton had a population of around 150 people. By 1850,Griffin had grown to over 1,000 people and was considered one of the most important cotton towns in Georgia. By 1861, when Georgia seceded from the Union,Griffin had become an independent Confederate town. It remained so until 1865 when it rejoined the Union.
