Griffin, Georgia is a town in Fulton County, Georgia, United States. The population was 9,823 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Atlanta metropolitan area. The town was founded by white men in 1827 and named after General James Griffin who had died two years earlier. Griffin became a constitutional convention center in 1832 and an agricultural community in 1840. In 1886, it became a city when the county of Fulton seceded from Georgia and incorporated as Griffin. The city's first mayor was John Pemberton. Northern Electric Company established its headquarters there in 1925. Griffin has been home to many famous people including former President George H.W. Bush and Olympian sprinting champion Usain Bolt

In 1785, a man named Griffin set out from his home in Chattahoochee County, Georgia, to found what would become the city of Griffin. The first settlers were farmer John Woolridge and his wife Hannah. The town was founded on the site of present day downtown Griffin on April 10, 1785. The original name for the city was "Newbern." The area that now makes up downtown Griffin was originally part of Cherokee Nation land. In 1802, the Treaty of Muskogee ceded this area to Georgia after a long battle between Creek and Seminole Indians. This treaty also included the nearby town of Newbern. After years of growth and development in Griffin, it became an incorporated city on September 15, 1853. Today, downtown Griffin is one of the most important business districts in metro Atlanta with over 100 businesses located within its boundaries. In 1865, Confederate General Nathan Bedford Forrest attacked Fort Donelson along the Tennessee River near Chattanooga while supplies were being brought across from Vicksburg to Confederate forces fighting in North Carolina. The Union army counterattacked and drove Forrest back into Alabama where he spent some time before returning to Chattanooga to lead another attack against Fort Donelson later that year.
