Griffin, Georgia is a small town in Cobb County, Georgia. It was founded in 1836 and is located on the east side of the Cascades Mountains. The population was 7,527 at the 2010 census. Griffin has a history as a center for gun target shooting dating back to 1836. Gun targets have been part of American tradition since their inception. The first targets were made from durable cloth and nailed to trees or buildings to provide practice for firearm owners and their children. Rifle ammunition and handguns only became available around 1850, butgun target shooting continued until the early 20th century because it was seen as an enjoyable pastime that could help people improve their aim and skills with firearms. In 1902, six young men from Griffin formed the nucleus of what would become Atlas Gun Club (AGC) which developed into one of the most successful rifle clubs in America. AGC members began making wooden targets out of tree branches and other materials they found around town. In 1933, AGC moved its target range from downtown Griffin to rural acres near where present-day Hoover Dam sits; today’s course is considered one of Atlanta’s premier rifle ranges). Today, Atlas Gun Club hosts monthly meetings for members who wish to learn more about NRA safety rules and also compete against each other in matches open to all levels of shooters including beginners through veterans.
