Griffin is a city in and the county seat of Griffin County, Georgia. The population was 14,890 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Atlanta metropolitan area. The first permanent settler in what became Griffin was James Cook on July 1, 1785. Cook named his land "Cook's Purchase" in honor of George Washington's Surveyor General for America. In 1802, twelve years after Washington's death, Major Robert Epps purchased from Cook2 640 acres (270 ha) southeast of present-day Griffin to establish a town site. In 1832, Daniel Webster bought 640 acres (270 ha) northeast of present-day Griffin from Epps for $1 million dollars3 and donated it to the state as the Griffinsville State Park4. The park now includes Mount Carmel Cemetery and much of downtown Griffin on its southeastern edge. A courthouse was erected in 1851 by Judge John Milledge5 adjacent to Wallenpaull Chapel6 near where Post Office Square now stands7. A fire destroyed most of downtown Griffin on November 11, 18718 but did not cause any damage to Wallenpaull Chapel which still stands today9. Many important events that occurred during Griffithian times include: Reconstruction South 9th Amendment Convention; passage of the Constitution granted voting rights to African Americans; creation of Griggs County 10th District Court House located east off Highway 50 south across from present day Peachtree Center Mall11; birthdays – January 21st 1865 – US Senator Alexander Stephens12 and December 6th 1911 – Governor Nathan Bedford Forrest13; tornado damage on October 22nd 1991 which killed 43 people14 within one mile (1 km) radius around downtown Griffin15 resulted in some rebuilding including new homes and businesses being built near Interstate 8516 as well as restoration/replacement/creation of parts or all of manyhistoric buildings long gone because they were damaged or destroyed by fire or tornado
Griffin was founded in 1821 by General George A. Griffin, a Confederate general and Medal of Honor recipient who also served as the first mayor of Griffin. The town was named for General Griffin's father, John C. Griffin, who had fought in the American Revolution and the Mexican War. The town became a stop on the Underground Railroad during the antebellum period because it was within easy reach of slave markets in Georgia.
