Griffin, Georgia is a small town in the Cobb CountyRegion of Georgia. The population was 2,871 at the 2010 census. Griffin is located on the east side of Atlanta and lies within the boundaries of Peachtree City School District No. 1. It is also within ZIP Code 10309. The land that now makes up Griffin was first settled by Scots-Irish farmers in 1820. The name "Griffin" comes from a location called GrifFINie (a type of field corn). In 1828, a post office was established at Griffin and it remains in operation to this day. The construction of the Atlanta and Chattanooga Railroad through Griffin began in 1867, connecting those two cities and helping to spur economic development in that area. The community quickly became an important stop for travelers on that route, hosting businesses such as hotels, restaurants, banks and other retail outlets until after World War II when malls replaced traditional retail locations in much of American suburbia. However, despite its proximity to Atlanta proper – only about 15 minutes away by car – Griffin languished economically throughout most of its history due to its lack of amenities or infrastructure for support such as transportation or shopping opportunities outside downtown Atlanta. That changed starting around the turn of the century when developers started knocking on doors looking for property for sale or redevelopment near what would become Midtown Center Mall and Central Avenue Crossing shopping complexes across from Braves Stadium (then known as Turner Field). As developments continued to grow around Midtown Center Mall and Central Avenue Crossing over time, so too did Griffin's population; today there are more than 3,000 residents living within city limits alone! In 2007–2008 efforts were made to revitalize GriffINg with an investment totaling $15 million dollars from private sources including Coca Cola Bottling Co., JCPenney Inc., Home Depot Inc., Sears Holdings Corporation & Park Lawn Realty Trustee Associates LLC among others This effort included creating new parks and opening up old industrial buildings into homes/commercial units/restaurants etc.. Despite some initial setbacks due to low enrollment (-3% growth rate during 2009), GriffINg has seen recent success with both commercial development (+5%) along with increasing government funding (+10%) which has helped drive job creation + increased housing prices (+10%). In 2013-2014 GriffINg absorbed Brushy Creek Apartments which had been vacant since early 2012 following their purchase by developer Eddie Durham who planed to turn it into one ofAtlanta's most vibrant mixed-use neighborhoods featuring high end apartments + local shops/restaurants
Griffin, Georgia was founded in 1824 by George Griffin and his brother, James. The town was named after General Thomas Griffin who died in the War of 1812. The first settler in Griffin was John Wayles. In 1828, a post office was established at Griffin, and mail service arrived from Savannah two years later. By 1830, there were about fifty people living in the town. The population grew rapidly during the late 1800s as a result of cotton farming and fishing industries. There were also small businesses soon sprang up in the town including grist mills, grocery stores, and blacksmiths. In 1903, Griffin became one of three towns in Cobb County to be incorporated under the new system of government which replaced the old system of traditional county-wide elections with a single municipal election held every two years for all village residents over age eighteen.
