It is the county seat of Hawkins County and part of the Atlanta metropolitan area. Griffin has been known for its natural resources, including coal and metal mines. In 1881, it became one of the first American towns to be founded on an intentionally created high bluff overlooking a navigable stream that later became known as Griffin's Stream. The town started out as a small farming community with just a few families. over time, however, Griffin's growth kept pace with its importance as a center for coal mining and other businesses in southeastern Georgia during the early 20th century. As production increased and people moved into Griffin, they built new homes and businesses in what is now downtown Griffin. By 1930, when Interstate 85 was built through Hawkins County, business had shifted from mining to commuting to jobs in Atlanta or elsewhere in southeast Georgia. The growth of downtown Griffin led to problems; by 2000, much of downtown had become vacant or derelict because of lack of development money available to improve it. In 2001–2002 The Nature Conservancy sent staff members to study how to preserve downtown Griffins' unique environment while accommodating continued residential development within walking distance of most restaurants and services (the "Downtown Development Agreement"). Afterward many residents began working together with City Hall officials on ways to redevelop Downtown Griffins without sacrificing its unique character orangering its endangered species populations

George's grandson, James Fenton Griffin became the first Mayor of Griffin and he served until 1828 when he was succeeded by his son, James Fenton Griffen. In 1849, Rev. Dr. Clements Grant established a church in Griffin and it remains one of the most popular local churches today. The town prospered under the Griffens until 1861 when their business interests were destroyed by fire and they lost all their property in the crash that followed. Afterward, life slowly resumed at its normal pace with some additions to the community such as a post office in 1875 and an elementary school in 1889 which remain active to this day
Griffin is a city in Hancock County, Georgia. The population was 7,605 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Augusta-Hancock metropolitan statistical area.
