AMMO HISTORY IN GREGORY, GEORGIA There has been ammo production in Griffin, Georgia for over 100 years. The first shots were fired at a fairgrounds on October 9th of 1892. Griffin was founded by two men named James and John Griffin. They built a sawmill and began to produce rounds of ammunition. On February 7th, 1899, the first gun show in Griffin was held. Ammunition dealers from all around the area came to see the new guns and equipment being exhibited. One of the exhibitors was Mr. Amos Aiken who started manufacturing his own ammunition in 1901. By 1912, there were over 50 different manufacturers operating in Griffin. Ammunition production continued until 1938 when World War II began and it ceased completely due to rationing. TheGriffin Armory is one of the oldest continuously running firearms stores in America with its roots dating back to 1903 when Jno Grigg opened his store at 1217 Beale Street near downtown Griffinville (now part of Downtown Atlanta). In 1924, Mr. Grigg moved his store to what is now located at 5015 Winchester Rd., just east of Interstate 75 in Sandy Springs (now part of Marietta). In 1936-37, Mr’Eddie Ladd bought the business from Mr Grigg and renamed it The recoil proof armory after himself and became very active in promoting shooting sports throughout Georgia including many Amateur Nationals which took place here including three world record shattering championships won by then NRA president Theodore Roosevelt at age 42! In 1941-42 during World War II Ammo Production resumed as resources were diverted towards war effort but again halted due to lack of munitions requisitioned locally! This stopped any further progress until 1951 when both Store locations reopened under new ownership with Mrs Gayle Stephens taking over from Mrs Ladd as President & CEO finally establishing Ammo history permanently within our community! Machine guns started becoming widespread in World War I thanks in part to advances in metalurgy and engineering; they soon replaced artillery as the primary means of destruction during war. In 1925, Browning introduced his first successful bolt-action machinegun; this design quickly became standard across all armies worldwide.
