The population was 7,569 at the 2010 census. Griffin was founded in 1851 by George Washington Griffin, who homesteaded land near what is now its downtown. Griffin has been known for its production of paper products, including pulp and paper. The town's first mill built in 1857 produced flour from wheat imported from England. Papermaking began in Griffin in 1865, when it merged with two other towns to form the "Cotton Belt" region around Atlanta. By 1920, about 60% of all paper made in the United States came from Griffin mills. Today, Griffin's economy revolves around information technology and services as well as agriculture and manufacturing. Papermakers continue to produce pulp and paper here; however, most mills are closed or out of business since 2013 due to economic conditions within their industries combined with competition from cheaper countries such as China and Korea. The downtown area is home to a number of interesting historical buildings that have been used for various purposes over the years: one building still functions as a municipal building (the original courthouse), while another was Converted into an apartment complex during the 1990s but has continued to be used as a museum (the Griffins Museum). There are also several places of worship located within walking distance of Griffin's central square: First Baptist Church (founded in 1853), Methodist Church (built 1888), Presbyterian Church (1892), Catholic Parish Church/School (1912), and African American Protestant church/mosque/mosque academy called Emmanuel AME Zion Bible Institute & School (.com name only - established 1957).

Griffin is a small town in Georgia. It was founded by white settlers in 1837 and named for General James Griffin. The area now includes the town of Griffin, as well as the unincorporated community of White Sands. The population was 5,818 at the 2010 census. The first settler in Griffin was George Troup, who arrived in 1837. He built a cabin on what is now Main Street. Troup's brother-in-law, Isaac Allred, also moved to Griffin and began operating a general store. In 1840, John Smith purchased land from Abram Cadwallader for $100 cash and developed it into a farmstead with four barns and twenty acres (10 ha). Smith became an early postmaster at Griffin and later served as justice of the peace. In 1847, William Hogg settled near the current intersection of Main and White Sands Streets. Hogg operated a grocery store from his home until 1861 when he sold it to Abraham Cadwallader Jr.. Cadwallader served as sheriff from 1851 to 1865; during this time, he also built two churches – one in downtown Griffin and one on Indian Hill Road outside the town limits. In 1863, Southern soldiers burned down part of downtown Griffintown after discovering Confederate partisan cells there; this event has been cited as one of the few instances where civilian casualties resulted from military action in Georgia during the Civil War era
Griffin was a small town in Cobb County, Georgia. It was founded in 1828 and later named for General James Griffin, who had fought in the Mexican-American War. The town declined during the Great Depression, but grew again during World War II when thousands of men from Griffin served in the military. After the war, Griffin became an agricultural center and saw a resurgence of its economy after legislation was passed to promote farming. The town has since declined again and is now a ghost town.
