Gainesville, Georgia is a small town located in Atlantia County, Georgia. It was founded on January 1, 1821 by Major George Wilkinson and his family. The first settler in Gainesville was James Wilkinson. In 1828, the land that now makes up Gainesville was granted to the Methodist Church by General Andrew Jackson. The land form part of what is now known as Chattahoochee River Parish. In 1831, Captain John Lowry established a trading post at Gainesville which served as the beginning of Gainesville's development as a town. In 1865, Captain Waddell Beall arrived at Gainesville with his wagon train and began selling goods from his farmstead near present-day Interstate 20 east of town. He named the post "Gainesville" after himself and donated all of the land on which he built his store and home. The first school in gainesville was erected in 1836 by Mrs. Mary Burchfield undermaster teacher Caterer Jepson from Marietta, Georgia. Mrs. Burchfield taught children in her home until 1840 when she moved to Athens to become principal of an academy there for girls only. A new school building was erected for use in 1840 by subscription among local citizens and it remained operational until 1959 when it burned down due to fire codes changes made during Governor Winthrop Scott's administration (1958-1960). A new school building was funded through a bond issue approved by voters in 1958 and dedicated on October 3rd that year with classes starting on November 1st that year; this marks the first time that gainesville had ever had both schools open simultaneously at one location! Over the years various other buildings were added or removed from campus including Landmark Hall (now theater), First Baptist Church (1864–1969), Post Office/Masonic Lodge (1966-present), Gadsden High School Annex (1974-present), Swanson Chapel (1978-present) and finally Southeast Technical College Building No 2(1987–1991). From its inception until 1979 Southeast Technical College operated out of Gadsden High School which housed several classrooms along with a gymnasium/WAVE machine shop used for many years before being leased back to SETC when they opened their new facility adjacent to commercial park across I-20 from SWCBI housing serving southeastern area students since 1978 On July 10th 1920 two young men – Earnest Randolph Hartsfield III & Harry Payne Whitney – traveled 471 miles nonstop from Atlanta via Mobile Bayou Bridge while living expenses were covered by their mother Anna Staley Hartsfeld who becameMrs Randolph's maid de facto throughout their journey
