Gainesville, Georgia was once a vibrant and thriving community that supported its citizens with gun ownership. The city’s history dates back to 1835 when it was founded by General Andrew Jackson as the town of Acworth. It quickly became an important center for cotton production and commerce. By the mid-19th century, Gainesville had become a busy commercial and industrial center. Gun Owners of America (GOA) helped drive this growth by organizing recreational gun shooting events in the city. These events helped promote gun ownership among local residents, while also providing opportunities for shooters to learn about firearms and how to use them safely. In 1947, GOA began holding annual target shoot-offs at the Acworth Golf Course in Gainesville. This event continued to be held annually until 2002, when it was replaced by the present day “Guns & Girlfriends” series of target shoots held at various locations around town. These shoots are now one of the largest and most popular firearm enthusiasts events in Georgia! Today, Gainesville is home to more than 3000 firearms owners who attend these annual shoots! Gun Owners of America continues to play a critical role in promoting gun rights here in GA – both through ourevents and our activism on Capitol Hill!

Gainesville, Georgia is an unincorporated community in Fulton County, Georgia, United States. It is located on the Chattahoochee River at mile marker 351.7, about 3 miles east of the county seat of Atlanta. The population was 1,811 as of the 2010 census.[1] The first white settlers arrived in what is now Gainesville in 1802 and were led by John Worth. Worth named his new settlement after himself and built a tavern there which he called "Gainesville". In 1824, George Washington ordered Colonel James McAllister to build a road from Marietta to Athens so that goods could be transported between those cities easily. This road became known as "Washington Road" and crosses the Chattahoochee River in Gainesville. In 1831, Nathan Bedford Forrest founded a cotton plantation within walking distance of Gainesville; this plantation would become one of America's largest plantations during the antebellum period. In 1834-1835, Alexander Macon owned land near present day Gainesville used for farming and hunting purposes; this area became known as "Macon's Grant". Macon also developed plantations near Auburn and Decatur in order to produce cotton while still having access to these markets. The region around present day Gainesville was mostly agricultural until shortly before World War II when it began becoming industrialized with the opening of several large textile companies such as American Textile Company (ATC), Wertheimer Brothers (WBR), International Paper Corporation (IPC), Southern Railway Company (SR) and Jardine Lumber & Steel Co.(JL&S). These companies brought numerous jobs into town and helped make gainesville an economically significant city by the end of World War II
