Gainesville was founded on January 6, 1819 by James Robertson and his wife, Catharine. During the height of the Gadsden Purchase War (1851-1852), Gainesville was one of several towns in Georgia that sided with the Confederacy. In 1862, after Confederate General Jubal Early captured Augusta, Georgia, Gainesville's main square was plastered with Confederate posters denouncing slavery and calling for a free Alabama. The town's residents were expelled from their homes and many were killed or wounded in what is known as the "Gadsden Massacre." In 1865, following the end of World War II and the atomic bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Gainesville became an important center for post-war veteran relocation. Many veterans settled in Gainesville because it offered large tracts of land and good schools for their children. The city still boasts some particularly impressive post-war landmarks such as Memorial Coliseum (now Citrus Bowl) and Veterans Memorial Stadium (now Georgia Dome).

In 1840, a steamboat called "The Enterprise" landed passengers at theage to cross the Chattahoochee River to Atlanta. On October 21, 1841chievement by General Ulysses S. Grant of an order authorizing Fort McAllister to be built on what is now University Drive led to increased traffic and development around town; Gainesville became known as "The Gator City". The original courthouse burned down in 1915 but was rebuilt and again used from 1929-2006 as the Municipal Building before being moved into its current location in 2006. Gainesville has been home to several colleges and universities since it was first settled: Southern Illinois University Carbondale (1901), Emory & Henry College (1902), Tuskegee Institute (1903), Georgia Tech (1905), and most recently Gwinnett Community College (2002).
