During World War II (1939–1945), gainsville served as an airfield used by both Allied forces and Japanese Imperial Japanplanes during World War II. It also served as one of two main ports located onshore in Northeast Georgia for military cargo flights outbound from Savannah Airport during that time period; other major airports located inland included Macon County Airport and Dahlonega Municipal Airport northwest of Atlanta).
