From 1830 to 1840, there were only three schools; two were used for primary grades and one served as a middle/high school from 1841-1853 when it became part of Alabama State Normal School until it merged into Emory University in 1898 In 1850 – Doane College opened as part of Reconstructionist efforts to rebuild southern colleges following civil unrest and slavery throughout America during that time period In 1861 – Confederate States Army officer Samuel JONES moved his family to Gainesville from Macon County after fleeing Arkansas during the American Civil War Jones had plans to open a military academy but did not establish it due to lack of support In 1865 – Union general Ewell Blackburn moved his headquarters from Chattanooga to Gainesville after routing Confederate forces at First Bull Run Aftermath: Gainsville becomes capital of new Union Territory while courthouse remains vacant until 1870 When Atlanta become capital enternace United States Constitution provided for relocation or demolition of old capitol buildings but this never happened due to strong protests led by Mayor Michael Collins who wanted old state Capitol restored instead At various points throughout its history including through both World Wars different federal government agencies such as Veterans Administration Facilities offices were located here including FBI Headquarters during World War II before they relocated back east In 1970s-1980s most major redevelopment took place with Woodruff Place taking over much acreage south side where original downtown development stopped and new shopping mall started Also several apartment complexes were built alongold downtown streets around Courthouse Square before being replaced by newer developments With growth came more problems such as traffic congestion caused around Courthouse Square which had been congested since shortly after incorporation Additionally there were concerns about changes coming about within our community like gentrification which seemed like it would impact low income neighborhoods hardest while also increasing crime rates among young people particularly those living near malls . All this culminated into Mayor Collins' effort known as "The Neighborhood Revitalization Initiative" or "RII" which aimed at reversing decades worth trends within our community
