Gainesville is a city in, and the county seat of, Gwinnett County, Georgia, United States. The population was 1,812 at the 2010 census. Gainesville is part of the Atlanta metropolitan area. The city has been inhabited by humans since before the Ice Age. It was founded in 1837 as a small town on the Chattahoochee River by General Andrew Jackson and his family. In 1865, after Confederate forces burned Gainesville to the ground during a battle fought there, President Abraham Lincoln ordered General Nathan Bedford Forrest to burn down all of Atlanta's cotton mills so that slave-owners could no longer produce goods for market. This event is commonly known as "The Battle of Atlanta". In 1871, Gainesville became an incorporated city under state law. The city's first mayor was Jimmie Lee Johnson. From 1974 to 2000 it was ruled by Mayor Sam Massells; he resigned effective January 1st 2001 due to term limits set in place by then- governor Sonny Perdue. During this time period several high-profile events took place within Gainesville including: On April 15th 1990 local police officer Curtis Hall fatally shot and killed Johnnie Ray Trammell Sr., grandson of founder of Coca ColaCola Dr Pepper Coorporated Johnnie Ray Trammell outside his home on Olde Hickory Lane just east of I-85 South after an altercation over money owed him from previous purchases at that store Earlier that night three other officers from nearby Gwinnett County responded to reports of gunshots being fired but found only Trammell lying on the ground with what appeared to be self inflicted gunshot wounds
