Gainesville, Georgia is a city in the US state of Georgia. It was founded on December 3, 1836, by James K. Gaines and his wife Anna Russell Gaines. The original town site was on the Chattahoochee River near present-day Decatur. The first gun target in Gainesville was built at what is now Worth Park in 1885. In 1898, the city banned handguns and developed an ordinance legalizing only shotguns and rifles for hunting purposes. The founding of Gainesville coincided with rapid growth in Georgia during the 19th century as plantations grew into towns and cities throughout the state. Cobb bought a piece of land on which he erected a shooting range and began selling targets to individuals and businesses in his town. The first target practice was held at the range on July 3rd. In 1839, Cobb built a larger building on the property for storage and use as a shooting gallery. On October 6th, 1841, Cobb opened his own business as an ammunition store and shot galleries were opened throughout the town. In 1846, Cobb's son-in-law leased part of his father's property for a rifle club that met there four times each month to shoot at targets provided by locals. By 1850, there were over twenty such clubs in Gainesville. In recent decades there have been efforts to revive interest ingainesville as a historical community: in 2006 a group of local historians created a website called "Gainesville: A History Reborn" to promote research into old photographs and homes associated with the town's past.
